ORPHEUS AND THE NYMPHS

(...) With their fair skins, long lustrous hairs flowing down their backs like waterfalls and liquid eyes, those woman of the deeps - water maidens that lived in the seas, lakes and rivers - were without a doubt the most beautiful thing that he had ever seen.
Hypnotized by the power and wisdom he felt in their all seeing eyes, Orpheus couldn't move a muscle. As they walked towards him with an aura of light around their divine bodies, the words formed in his spirit in a voice that wasn't his own:
"Now is the time, this is the hour. Come son of the Earth, open your soul to us... take within you the spirit of the gods that we offer you in this solemn day. Prepare your heart, for a great and powerful destiny awaits you. Kings shall fall at your feet and giants will meet their deaths by the sound of your music. Apollo, Lord of the Sun, chose you at birth to defend his cause and blessed you with many gifts. Walk the path that he chose for you, and the powers of the Other World will be at your command. Do not fear... you won't have to face the terrors of your mission on your own. We will always be near to guide you through all of it."
As unexpectedly as they came, the nymphs disappeared into the waters of the lake. Petrified by what he had just experienced, Orpheus began to wonder if he ever saw anything at all. Maybe it all was nothing but a dream... his fertile imagination playing tricks on him. However, something in his mind told him different, for there would have to be a reason why he couldn't stop feeling shivers going down his back. (...)

Hey y'all. This is another piece from a series on Greek myths that I've been working on. I photographed the models myself and then came up with this illustration. As some of you may notice, I was inspire by the paintings from the pre-Raphaelite period and other few from the renaissance.
I also wrote this text to go with the illustration - well, I'm only posting a tiny part of the original tale because it would be too long for the web. I did my best to translate it to English without losing its essence, but I confess that my English skills are not that great - the Portuguese version is much better :S
I hope you guys like it :)

Models from left to right:
SOPHIA PAN. Sophia is not a stranger to my loyal readers because she has been modeling for me for about a year now, and has already taken part in a several of my illustrations. She is a very talented and amazingly chameleonic, London based model. I love working with her and recommend her modeling services to anyone.

JORIS JÂRVIS LECHÊNE: Joris is an extremely talented and very easy going French model, currently based in Lisbon. Besides the obvious - his ethnic beauty and natural charm, he has a lot of presence and he's very charismatic. He's also a very reliable and responsible guy, he always shows up on time. This is the first time that we have worked together and I am really happy with the result. I think that he has the perfect look for the kind of work that I do, I'm looking forward to work with him again. I recommend him to all great photographers out there.

JOANA MOITAS BEJA: Joana isn't a newbie here on the blog. You probably remember her from my previous post Nimue Drowned in the Water. What can I say about her... This gorgeous girl has been my very best friend since like... EVER. We are friends since I was 4 and she was 2. She is part of who I am, I really can't imagine my life without Joana being in it. Surprisingly, she is not a professional model, she only accepted to do this session as a favor to me (wasn't very easy to convince her :P). Besides her mesmerizing looks, she is an incredible pianist and a music teacher. I hope that she liked the experience and grants me the pleasure of working with her many more times in the future.

I would like to thank my models for the great job we did together and for putting up with me and my crazy ideas. Please forgive me for all the long hours we spent inside ice cold water, shivering from head to toe. I hope that you think it was all worth it :P

"É chegada a hora.

Provavelmente lembrar-se-ão dela na minha série Nimue Drowned in the Water.

THE MOON DANCER

(...) In that moment the princess knew that the only way to break the spell that turned her sisters into stone, was to call upon the forces of the Other Realm. It was time. The strange stone necklace that the wise woman gave her the other day by the river was glowing. She was told only to use it when the time was right. The woman warned her that it was very powerful and should not be used unless it was an hour of despair. Well…that was definitely the case.
She started to say the magic words and began to perform the Moon dance that would open the gates between her world and the other.
As she was dancing, a strong wind started to blow, whipping her long golden hair. Help was on its way (...)

Chegara a hora.
Ajuda vinha a caminho (...)

THE MUSHROOM FAIRY

In some special places that still preserve some of the ancient magic, where the trees are old and wise, improbable things can still happen. If you look closely, you might see them. Behind a sacred tree or a magic stone, near a mushroom ring or a deep lake in the forest…if you seek for them in a misty day or after the rain, you might as well find one or two. Although that seems possible... it is also rather unlikely.

THE GARDEN OF LIVE FLOWERS (Alice:Through the Looking Glass)

(…) This time she came upon a large flower-bed, with a border of daisies.
- “Oh Tiger-lily” - said Alice, addressing herself to one that was waving gracefully about in the wind – “I wish you could talk!
- “We can talk” - said the Tiger-lily – “when there's anybody worth talking to."
Alice was so astonished that she could not speak for a minute: it quite seemed to take her breath away. At length, as the Tiger-lily only went on waving about, she spoke again, in a timid voice, almost in a whisper:
– “And can all the flowers talk?”
- “As well as you can” - said the Tiger-lily. (…)

- “Todas as flores sabem falar?”
- “Tão bem como tu” - disse o Lírio-tigrino. (...)

NEED A HAND CINDERELLA?

(...) “Why do you look so sad Cinderella?” - Asked this beautiful butterfly that came in through the kitchen door.
The girl burst into tears, and said that she was never going to finish all the work she had to do before her Stepmother arived.
– “Do you need a hand?” – Asked the two little mice, as more animals came to comfort the unfortunate girl (...)

DEEP IN THE WOODS

The Weather was mild in the Autumn Equinoce´s eve, when young Kea´s mother sent her to the village with the purpose to deliver a message to her aunt Tellery. After eating a piece of berry pie that her aunt ofered her, she prepared herself to walk back home.
- “ take this oil lamp with you, dear” – Recommended her aunt – “The night might catch you in the way”.
It was a long walk, and in an attempt to shorten the time of the jorney, Kea decided to take a shortcut through the woods. About half of the way, she stood in the middle of the forest, confused.
- “ that´s strange” – She thought – “ I´m sure that the old stone foot-path should be rigth there, next to that tree.” – With an increasing unpleasant feeling, Kea rambled throught the trees, walking deeper and deeper into the leafy oak forest, where the vegetation was thicker, and the trees where older, with twisted and mossy roots. The more she walked, the less familiar the scenery appeared to her. Starting to get scared, and beginning to acept the fact that she was lost, she considered her chances and decided that tbe best thing to do was look for shelter, since it was already getting dark. Resigned, she took shelter in a cozy hollow surface formed by the roots of two very old trees, decided to wait there for the dawn. The night finaly fell - thank god for her aunt´s oil lamp!
Kea was tired of the jorney and her eyelids where starting to get heavy. She was awaken by a peculiar sound – “ Oh Lord! I must have fallen asleep!” – she thought – “ I can only hope that the oil lamp last until daylight!”.
Suddenly, from the darkness apered a squirrel and a red fox. They seemed not to find her presence strange at all, as if Kea had always stood there, in that particular spot since the beginning of times. They approached her with their kind expressions, as if they where welcoming her. She Could almost hear the words that their eyes seemed to speak: Don´t fear, whe are heare to protect you!
Above her head echoed the chirp of an owl, that came to join them. Kea was grateful for their warm, for the night was cold. She suddenly felt safer and comfortable. Snuggled in the middle of the animals, and now feeling calm with their peaceful presence, the tiredness took over her body again, and her heavy eyelids insisted on closing.
Another sound, now diferent, awoke her from that pleasant sluggishness. A sound that was diferent from everything that she had ever heard. Like whispers in the wind, but much more than that at the same time.
That´s when she saw them…apearing from the inexorable darkness of the forest, heading playful towards her, or receding disdainful, spreading their bright auras throughout the blackness of the woods. Welcome little sister, seemed the wind to whisper.
Surrounded by that profusion of colorful lights, and tranquilized by the presence of the animals, she fell into a deep and dreamless sleep.
When she finally woke up, the sun was shining hight in the sky. She was really surprised to see that the old stone foot-path was right there in front of her. It was unbelievable that she didn´t notice it before. Was she getting mad? She felt like she slept for days.
She decided that all was nothing but a dream, and returned to the road so she could walk back home.
- “ WHERE HAVE YOU BEEN young girl?” – Yeled her mother rather furious, when she finally got to the village – “It´s been more than a week since you left. The men are all looking for you through the woods. Whe where all imagining that you had been attacked by a wolf or something like that. Do you want your poor mother to have a heart attack?
More than a week? – Thought Kea with a shiver. Slowly, from a place in her memory that she didn´t even know that existed, emerged the words that the oldest woman from the village said to her one day. Kea couldn´t tell how that she remembered it. Everybody knew that it was nothing but rubbish from a senile old woman.
- “Time runs differently in fairyland” – she said – “You can spend a night there, and find out when you return, that a 100 years went by”.

* This story and this illustration is deticated to my good friend Ana de Amsterdam, that kindly acepted to pose as a photographic model to this illustration.

” – Pensou ela.
- "ONDE ESTIVESTE minha menina"?

DON´T BE SAD CINDERELLA

(…) “Don´t be sad Cinderella” – said the two little mice – “Your prince will look for you through the entire kingdom, and he´ll find you!”
The Four birds started calling their friends, and soon all the animals from the woods surrounding the farm gadered to help poor Cinderella.
– “Cheer up!” – they said – “we´ll help you clean the kitchen floor before your step-mother arrives!” (…)

BORED RAPUNZEL

- “Where the HELL is that damned prince?!?” – Thought the bored to death Rapunzel as she was standing at the window, listening to her bird friend singing her favourite song for the tenth time that day. Her mind wondered about where her prince could be. She had a feeling that the reason he hadn´t come to her rescue by then, was because he was having an affair with another story tale princess…she was certain it was Cinderlla – that bitch!
Well, if her increasingly suspicion proved to be true, he should consider him self a dead prince!

WICKED WEED

(…) It was already past midnight when little Liam heard a strange noise that woke him up. That grotesque scraching sound seamd to come from outside. He walked towards the bedroom window and looked down to the backyard. What he saw petrified him. Screeching in the dark was this bizarre green man, who looked like a walking tree, tearing all the flowers apart.
- “But I saw it mummy, I swear!” – assured young Liam – “snoopy didn´t ruin your petunias…the Wicked Weed Man did!”
- “What have I told you about lying Liam? You´re grounded for a week!” (…)

Aquele som áspero e grotesco parecia vir do exterior.

4 SEASONS IN AXIS MUNDI

Far, far away, there was this gigantic moutain that was believed to be the centre of the world. In this magical place grew an extraordinary tree of remarkable powers that was seen by many as the connection between heaven and earth, as well as the underground. It provided a path between the three cosmic levels. All energy of life moved round that outstanding tree and was sustained by it. Therefore, the weather of the whole world was determined in that particular spot. The four seasons began earlier and were intenser there than anywhere else, spreading afterwards from that place to the rest of the Earth. (…)

NEPTUNE versus the GORGONS

(…) And the mighty Neptune fought bravely against the sorcery of the Gorgons, but they where determined to carry out the task of revenging their sister Medusa, that he once ravished when she served as a priestess in the temple of Athena.
Jealous of the idea that Medusa, who was previously gorgeous, attracted the attention of both men and gods, Athena changed her into a hideous gorgon.
And so her magnificent long hair that had been originally envied by many, were changed into slithering serpents. (…)

GLORIOUS GRACE

(…) And then, the devoted Queen Gwenhwyfar fell on her knees before the majesty of the Lord, and her heart marveled at the overwhelming glorious grace of God. Suddenly a wonderful scent of roses filled the air, and a rejoicing melody was heard: “Gloriana, Gloriana!” (…)

HEY, COME PLAY WITH ME

(…) The computers were dead. All the electronic equipment had stoped working, and the compass needle went crazy. They lost track of time, for all the clocks aboard the submarine where broken too.
The tension amongst the members of the crew was increasing. They where lost. Unable to find the problem In the controls room, Captain Stuart was upset.
Strangely he felt a sudent urge to turn arround, as if he was being watched. He couldn´t believe his eyes! Looking in through the porthole, a strange creature of the sea observed him.
Slowly, the words formed in his spirit, in a voice that wasn´t his own: “Hey, come play with me!” (…)

ALICE IN WONDERLAND - The Queen’s Croquet Ground

(…) “Off with her head!!!” - yelled the Queen of Hearts, as the astonished Alice stared at her.
– “whas she really playing Croquet using an inocent flamingo and harmeless hedgehog?? How cruel of her!!” – thought the girl.
– “You have no manners at all, young girl! What are you doing in Wonderland anyway?”
– “Oh, I was just chasing the white rabbit, to find out where he´s going in such a hurry!” (…)

- pensou a menina.

ALICE IN WONDERLAND - Advice from a caterpillar

The Caterpillar took the hookah out of its mouth, and addressed her in a languid, sleepy voice.
– “Who are YOU?” – said the Caterpillar. Alice replied, rather shyly – “I hardly know, sir!” (…)
– “ What size do you want to be?” – it asked. – “One side of the mushroom will make you grow taller, and the other side will make you grow shorter.”
Alice remained looking at the mushroom, trying to make out which were the two sides of it (…)
