Hello everybody! how are you all doing? hope you have started 2012 with your right foot :)

MOON DANCE

So it's been about a month since my surgery... I am still at home recovering slowly, but fortunately all is going well. I hope that you all had a great Christmas with those you love.

Here's a little something that I did in collaboration with one of my best friends - Daniela Valdez aka Senhorita Valdez. She is a copywriter and a brand strategist and has the mind of a genius. She did the writing, I illustrated her text. You probably remember her from my previous piece Please don't Die , where we also worked together. I had fun doing this piece :)

BEHOLD MY NEW BJD (ball jointed doll)

Hey friends! how are you all doing? Happy holidays!!!!

Ok, so I recently found out that I love these Asian dolls called BJD (ball jointed dolls), and despite the fact that they are obscenely expensive... I got one anyway. This doll has proven to be very helpful in my illustration work 'cause he's a very realistic model and it's precious when it comes to light/shade studies, not to mention his anatomical accuracy. They come in different sizes but the most common are 50, 60 and 70 cms. This one is from one of my favorite Korean stores: Soom Emporium. I thought I could share some photos I took with him :)

Adquiri recentemente este boneco asiático que se encaixa na categoria dos BJD (ball jointed dolls), para usar como modelo de desenho e fotografia. Estou bastante contente com os resultados que consigo alcançar com ele, porque tem sido uma preciosa ajuda no que respeita a estudos anatómicos e de luz/sombra. Estes bonecos estão disponíveis em vários tamanhos mas os mais comuns são os de 50, 60 ou 70 cms. O meu veio de uma das minhas lojas coreanas preferidas: Soom Emporium. Resolvi partilhar convosco algumas fotos que tirei com ele. Espero que gostem!

Hey friends! hope that you are all well! I'm going to be committed to the hospital next Friday for a surgery in my left hip (don't ask... long story), so I'm probably going to be away from blogging for a while. Meanwhile, I wanted to share with you guys one last work that I've just finished before I go. This is my most recent photo-illustration that I did with some photos that I took last year - a sequel to my previous piece "Orpheus and the nymphs".

EGOÍSTA MAGAZINE #47 (Legends on the Wall)

Hello blogger buddies! Hope you are all doing great. I miss commenting your blogs and reading your lovely comments in mine, but by life has been more of a mess that the usual, so... I'm just trying to catch my breath :P

For the first time, something that I wrote was published - and in one of the few top quality Portuguese magazines on art and culture. Egoísta magazine published a full 8 page aticle completely written and illustrated by me. I have to thank Patrícia Reis - Egoísta's Editor in Chief for believing in my work enough to publish it.

LEGENDS ON THE WALL: This project consists in a series of artistic panels inspired by the mural paintings of the Renaissance, Baroque and Pre-Raphaelite periods.

work process: I photographed the models myself, then worked on the photos in Adobe Photoshop, doing both post-production work and digital painting + photo-illustration.

This project was published in EGOÍSTA MAGAZINE issue #47
EGOÍSTA is one of the best Portuguese print magazines on art and culture and it is owned by Estoril Sol Group.

Pela primeira vez, alguns textos escritos por mim foram publicados - e anda por cima numa das revistas de melhor qualidade no âmbito das artes e cultura. A revista Egoísta, propriedade do grupo Estoril Sol, publicou um artigo de 8 páginas totalmente escrito e ilustrado por mim. LEGENDS ON THE WALL: este projecto consiste numa série de painéis inspirados nos frescos renascentistas e nas pinturas de mural dos períodos Pré-Rafaelita e Barroco.

Hello dear old blogger friends and followers! I hope that you are enjoying the Summer and having a great time :)

This project is a collaboration between me and one of my best friends, miss Daniela Valdez, aka Senhorita Valdez. I came up with the concept and title for this image and invited her to create a fiction writing to go along with it. She is a Brand Strategist and Copywriter, her writing skills are amazing and therefore we decided to combine forces. She wrights, I illustrate. I really enjoyed working with her and we will keep projects like this coming. I hope you like it!

UMBIGO MAGAZINE ISSUE #37

Hey folks! here's my latest piece for UMBIGO magazine. The text speaks about the Lolita Fashion (a fashion subculture originating in Japan that is based on Victorian clothing as well as costumes from the Rococo period. It has evolved into several different sub styles and has a subculture that is present in many parts of the world). You have probably seen lolita figures in Mangá/anime comics and cartoons. I've decided to paint a Gothic Lolita. I was responsable for illustration and graphic design in this spread. Text was written by Núria Monteiro. Hope you like it :)

O texto fala de uma moda que teve origem no Japão e que se tornou uma subcultura - A moda das Lolitas, que consiste em roupas de inspiração vitoriana e com influências do período Rococó. Os desenhos animados e BDs nipónicas (Mangá/Anime) fazem muita alusão à figura das lolitas. Para ilustrar este texto decidi pintar uma Lolita gótica. NEIGHBOR TO THE BIRDS

Hello Friends! 2 posts in the same month eh? I'm getting better aren't I? :P

So... I have been reading Thoreau lately. I specially love a passage from Walden and while I was reading it, this image was formed in my mind like an epiphany. The feeling that I had to get it out of my head and turn it into something tangible haunted me for days, so I finally decided to create this piece. I hope you guys like it and your opinions are very welcome.

The excerpt that inspired me to do this illustration is this one:
"I found myself suddenly neighbor to the birds; not by having imprisoned one, but having caged myself near them.” Thoreau, Henry David. Walden, 1854

Ultimamente tenho andado a ler Thoreau. Gostei especialmente de uma passagem do livro Walden, Ou Uma Vida Nos Bosques. (1) Enquanto lia o excerto em questão, uma imagem formou-se na minha mente como se de uma epifania se tratasse :P
Durante dias tive a sensação de que tinha de transformar aquela imagem etérea numa coisa real e tangível que se pudesse ver, e assim nasceu esta ilustração. Espero que gostem e agradeço as vossas opiniões.

ILLUSTRATION NOW PORTRAITS (Taschen)

Hello humans! I know that I have been really absent from the blogosphere for a long now and I apologize to all of my loyal followers and good old blogger friends for not being as present as I used to. The truth is that my life is kind of a mess right now and I just don't have the time nor the energy to blog. My newborn nephew has been in the hospital for almost 2 months fighting for his life, and it has been a hard time on my family. Waiting for good news each day and seeing my sister's agony is killing me. It's impressive how strong premature babies can be... and it's also ironic how tiny beings like them can teach us all lessons of courage and strength. Despite of all the odds, my baby nephew survived 3 surgeries in the last month, 2 of them, including a heart surgery, in one week. I hope with all my heart that he get's well soon and I would really appreciate your prayers and positive thoughts :)

Meanwhile, I have some good news (thank GOD!) to share with you guys:

Once again I had the honor of having my work selected to be featured in a TASCHEN book. Illustration Now! Portraits is TASCHEN'S most recent book on Illustration and it gathers together the exclusive portrait work of over 80 illustrators from all over the world, and I feel very lucky to be among them. Huge thanks to Taschen's Editor-In-Chief - Julius Wiedemann, for the invitation to take part in this project and for believing in my work.
The awesomeeee part is that one of the images that they selected to be featured in the book is my self-portrait :D that means that my face is ALL OVER THE WORLD now! hahaah :P
Another great thing is that I get to be in this book along with my old blogger friend Dominic Philibert, who was also selected as a featured artist in this book... YAY! :D

O Livro Illustration Now! Portraits é a mais recente publicação da Taschen na área da ilustração e reúne obras de 80 ilustradores de todo o mundo, exclusivamente focalizadas na arte de retrato. Sinto-me bastante honrado de me encontrar entre os artistas seleccionados. Um MUITO OBRIGADO ao Editor-In-Chief da Taschen, Julius Wiedemann, pelo convite para participar este projecto e por ter acreditado no meu trabalho.

COMPUTER ARTS #5 (Portuguese Edition)

Sooooo... I've been working on a new illustration and I'm dying to have it finnished so I can share it you you guys and have your opinions and critiques, BUT it's not ready to see the light of day just yet, so it will probably take a while before I post some fresh stuff.

AMERICAN DESIGN AWARDS

Hey friends! I have been planning to share this great news with all of you for a while now, especially with those of you who have been following my work from the very beginning of this blog. But, as I mentioned in my previous post, I have been extremely busy and I haven't had the time to blog much these days. However, (thank God for the weekend) I finally got a little bit of time for an update, so here it goes:

As some of you may remember, precisely a year ago in February 2010, I won 1st and 2nd place for the illustration category in the 2010 Winter Semi Anual Contest by the American Design Awards.

Well, this time I'm posting the good news that I have also won 1st and 2nd place for the illustration category in the 2010 SUMMER Semi Annual Contest again! I feel very honored for the fact that the jury has given me both 1st and 2nd prize, for the SECOND TIME. I really wasn't expecting it and it was a very nice surprise.

Olá amigos! Há já algum tempo que pretendo partilhar esta boa nova convosco, especialmente com aqueles que acompanham este blog desde o início. Como alguns de vós talvez se lembrem, há precisamente um ano atrás, fui contemplado com dois prémios na categoria de ilustração nas American Design Awards.

Desta vez, tive a honra de ser premiado pelo segundo ano consecutivo, recebendo novamente os prémios para o primeiro e segundo lugar na categoria de ilustração no evento 2010 SUMMER Semi Annual Contest promovido pelas American Design Awards.

Sinto-me especialmente honrado pelo facto de o Juri me ter atribuído novamente dois prémios na mesma categoria. Não o postei mais cedo porque além de andar muito ocupado, tive de esperar algum tempo até receber os certificados e a placa/troféu relativos aos prémios. Espero que estejam todos bem!

Big hello to all humans (and aliens) who follow this blog. Yes, yes, I'm still alive, thank you :P

I know it's been a very long time since my last post and that you guys have probably forgotten the fact that even exist, BUT... this is me trying to make it up to you, so here is my redemption post. These are a few illustrations that I made for a local graphic design studio called Creative Family.

I hope you people can forgive my absence, I'm so sorry for the lack of comments in your amazing blogs :( I have been crazy busy lately and time to blog is something that I'm finding a little hard to get, BUT... hopefully things will settle dow soon and in no time I will stalk you all with non stop comments. MISS YOU ALL TO DEATH! Do you still love me? lol

Eu sei que já lá vai um tempo desde o meu último post e que vocês provavelmente já não se lembram que eu existo, MAS... para me redimir, aqui vai um post fresquinho de compensação, com algumas ilustrações que fiz para uma empresa local de design gráfico chamada Creative Family. Espero que possam perdoar a minha ausência prolongada da blogosfera e a abstinência de comentários nos vossos blogs fantásticos :( mas é que tenho andado mais ocupado do que uma formiga histérica no inverno, e tempo para "blogar" é coisinha que definitivamente não tem havido. Assim que as coisas acalmarem prometo perseguir-vos até já não me poderem ver com tanto comentário. TENHO SAUDADES VOSSAS!! ainda gostam de mim? lol

I finally got some time to post something - It has been so long since my last post... I hope you guys still remember who I am, lol!

I have been working with UMBIGO magazine for about a year now and I really enjoy working with them because they always let me do what I feel like doing, with no boring rules to ruin my creativity. It's awesome to see my work coming out in print exactly the way I expected. This magazine is very cool and the print quality is really excellent - they work with the best printer house in the country called M2. I always get excited when my complimentary copy of the magazine arrives in my mail box and I get to see the result of what I have created. I made this illustration for the latest issue of the magazine. I was responsible for both Illustration and graphic design in this page... hope you like it!

Olá amigos blogueiros e fiéis seguidores. Espero que estejam a ter um óptimo Natal com os vossos amigos e família, repleto de doces deliciosos e coisas que engordem muito! :D

Finalmente consegui um tempinho para postar alguma coisa - passou-se tanto tempo desde o meu último post que espero que vocês ainda se lembrem que eu existo :P

Tenho estado a trabalhar com a revista UMBIGO há cerca de um ano e posso dizer que gosto muito de trabalhar com eles porque a equipa é fantástica e diferentemente do que se passa com outras publicações afins, o director criativo incentiva bastante a criatividade dos colaboradores e não impõe quaisquer tipo de regras chatas. É óptimo constatar que o meu trabalho sai na impressão exactamente como eu o projectei (às vezes melhor ainda). A qualidade de impressão da UMBIGO é excelente - eles trabalham com a M2, que está cotada como a melhor gráfica do país. Fico sempre curioso para ver como o meu trabalho sairá no número seguinte da revista. Fiz esta ilustração para o #35. Fui também responsável pela parte de design gráfico desta página... Espero que gostem!

TASCHEN CALENDAR (Illustration Now!)

Hello blogger world! As some of you may remember, last year I was selected as one of the artists whose work was featured in TASCHEN's book ILLUSTRATION NOW! volume 3.

This year, to promote the book TASCHEN published "Illustration Now!" diaries and calendars. Once again I had the honor to have my work chosen to be featured in the 2011 calendar.

I always loved TASCHEN, - my bedroom shelfs are filled with their books on illustration, graphic design, photography and advertisement. I always thought that TASCHEN was synonymous of excellence, glamour and good taste, so I'm very happy to have my work associated with them.

Many thanks to julius Wiedemann for being always so thoughtful and for treating artists with such concern and respect.

Saudações blogosfera! Como alguns de vós talvez se lembrem, o meu trabalho foi seleccionado para ser exibido no livro ILLUSTRATION NOW! 3 da editora TASCHEN que chegou às livrarias no final do ano passado.

Este ano, para promover o livro na altura do Natal, a TASCHEN decidiu lançar no mercado alguns materiais promocionais do livro, nomeadamente, agendas, cadernos e calendários. Mais uma vez, tive a honra de ser um dos artistas escolhidos para o calendário de 2011.

Hey World! How are you all doing my friends? good I hope.

So what the hell is going on with the weather these days? We better start believing in the apocalypse prophecies, cause from what I can see right now from my bedroom window... boy we're gonna need Noah's ark all over again! :P it's raining non stop for 3 days now, spreading chaos all over Lisbon.

Here are a few recent publications: Umbigo and Dif magazine are October issues, and Offf catalogue is from last June, but my copy of the catalogue only arrived this month - humpf!

In Umbigo Magazine I did the whole spread, meaning that both illustration and graphic design is my doing :)

ORPHEUS AND THE NYMPHS

Hey y'all. This is another piece from a series on Greek myths that I've been working on. I photographed the models myself and then came up with this illustration. As some of you may notice, I was inspire by the paintings from the pre-Raphaelite period and other few from the renaissance.
I also wrote this text to go with the illustration - well, I'm only posting a tiny part of the original tale because it would be too long for the web. I did my best to translate it to English without losing its essence, but I confess that my English skills are not that great - the Portuguese version is much better :S
I hope you guys like it :)

SOPHIA PAN. Sophia is not a stranger to my loyal readers because she has been modeling for me for about a year now, and has already taken part in a several of my illustrations. She is a very talented and amazingly chameleonic, London based model. I love working with her and recommend her modeling services to anyone.

JORIS JÂRVIS LECHÊNE: Joris is an extremely talented and very easy going French model, currently based in Lisbon. Besides the obvious - his ethnic beauty and natural charm, he has a lot of presence and he's very charismatic. He's also a very reliable and responsible guy, he always shows up on time. This is the first time that we have worked together and I am really happy with the result. I think that he has the perfect look for the kind of work that I do, I'm looking forward to work with him again. I recommend him to all great photographers out there.

JOANA MOITAS BEJA: Joana isn't a newbie here on the blog. You probably remember her from my previous post Nimue Drowned in the Water. What can I say about her... This gorgeous girl has been my very best friend since like... EVER. We are friends since I was 4 and she was 2. She is part of who I am, I really can't imagine my life without Joana being in it. Surprisingly, she is not a professional model, she only accepted to do this session as a favor to me (wasn't very easy to convince her :P). Besides her mesmerizing looks, she is an incredible pianist and a music teacher. I hope that she liked the experience and grants me the pleasure of working with her many more times in the future.

I would like to thank my models for the great job we did together and for putting up with me and my crazy ideas. Please forgive me for all the long hours we spent inside ice cold water, shivering from head to toe. I hope that you think it was all worth it :P

Tão inesperadamente como haviam surgido, as ninfas desapareceram nas águas do lago. Petrificado com o que acabara de experienciar, Orpheus começou a duvidar de que tivesse de facto visto alguma coisa. Talvez tudo não tivesse passado de um delírio... sempre tivera uma imaginação muito fértil. Ainda assim, não conseguia afastar a sensação gelada, o calafrio que lhe atravessava a espinha, provocada pelo contacto com sobrenatural. (...)

Olá a todos! Esta é mais uma ilustração da série de mitos gregos em que tenho estado a trabalhar. Após fotografar os modelos, concebi este painel inspirado nos murais renascentistas e nos quadros Pré-Rafaelitas. Escrevi também um conto para acompanhar a ilustração. Estou a postar apenas um pequeno excerto, na medida em que se tornaria saturante lê-lo por inteiro online. Espero que gostem!

SOPHIA PAN: A Sophia já não é uma estranha para os leitores assíduos do meu blogue, uma vez que tenho vindo a trabalhar com ela há já um ano, e fizemos já vários trabalhos juntos. Ela é uma talentosa e extremamente camaleónica modelo portuguesa, que se encontra de momento a viver em Londres. Gosto muito de trabalhar com ela e recomendo vivamente os seus serviços de modelo fotográfico.

JORIS JÂRVIS LECHÊNE: O Joris é um talentoso manequim francês, de momento a viver em Lisboa. Para além do óbvio: a sua beleza natural e look étnico, ele tem uma presença muito forte e é super carismático. É muito fácil trabalhar com ele na medida em que percebe com facilidade o objectivo do trabalho e capta as direcções do fotógrafo de uma forma quase automática. É também bastante confiável, responsável e chega sempre a horas. Foi a primeira vez que trabalhámos juntos e fiquei muito satisfeito com o resultado... foi um prazer e espero voltar a trabalhar com ele brevemente. Penso que ele tem o look ideal para o tipo de trabalho que eu faço. Recomendo o Joris a todos os bons fotógrafos.

Esta rapariga lindíssima é a minha melhor amiga desde...SEMPRE. Somos amigos desde que tenho 4 anos e ela 2. A joana faz já parte de mim, ajudou a moldar a minha personalidade e não seria quem sou se ela não existisse na minha vida. Surpreendentemente, ela não é modelo de profissão, apenas aceitou realizar esta sessão como um favor pessoal, e confesso que foi um castigo convence-la. Para além da sua beleza hipnotizante, a Joana é uma talentosa pianista e professora de música. Espero que ela tenha gostado da experiência e que me conceda o privilégio de trabalhar com ela mais vezes no futuro.

Gostaria de agradecer aos meus modelos pelo bom trabalho que realizamos juntos e por tolerarem as minhas ideias loucas. Espero que me possam perdoar pelas longas horas que passamos enfiados dentro de água gelada a tremer dos pés à cabeça. Espero também que achem que tenha valido a pena :P

DIF MAGAZINE #76: Urban Girls

Yoh everybody! So... Autumn is here to stay, eh? (well, for some of us... humpf)! It's raining non stop outside the window. Argh, I really don't want to go to work tomorrow :P

This is an illustration that i did for DIF magazine (a very cool Portuguese mag). The theme was Urban Girls and the article is about how woman in modern cities had to struggle to succeed in these competitive environments that were once ruled by men. My favorite phrase from the article is: "MOST OFFICIAL BITCHES RULE SUPREME".

This issue of DIF magazine was redesigned by a great Portuguese graphic designer called Ricardo Mealha. I think that he did an amazing job :)

The editorial team was awesome and published my self-portrait and biography.

Olá companheiros blogueiros! Parece que o Outono veio para ficar. Não para de chover lá fora... Argh! não me está nadaaaa a apetecer ir trabalhar amanhã :P

Fiz esta ilustração para a revista DIF. O tema é Urban Girls, e o artigo debruça-se sobre a forma como as mulheres nos grandes centros urbanos tiveram de labutar para conseguirem ser bem sucedidas num meio que era governado por homens. A minha frase favorita do artigo é: "MOST OFFICIAL BITCHES RULE SUPREME".

Este número da DIF foi redesenhado pelo grande Ricardo Mealha, que por sinal fez uma belíssimo trabalho.

Hey Y'all! Whassup everybody? hope you are all doing great! Here are some portraits that I have recently done.

1 - Fernando Pessoa (1888- 1935) was one of the greatest Portuguese poets/writers ever.

2 - Amália Rodrigues (1920-1999) was a Portuguese singer and actress. She was known as the "Queen of Fado" and was most influential in popularizing the fado worldwide. Fado is a portuguese music genre characterized by mournful tunes and lyrics. The word Fado means fate.

3 - Chico Buarque is a singer, guitarist, composer, dramatist, writer and poet. He is best known for his music, which often includes social, economic and cultural commentary on Brazil and Rio de Janeiro in particular.

I can't decide which version of Amalia's portrait I like better, so I'm posting both :) These where all painted in photoshop... this time I wanted something different, so I painted them in a different style, using brushes and overlayed textures to emulate traditional materials and techniques.

Não consigo decidir qual das duas versões cromáticas do retrato da Amália me agrada mais, por isso estou a postar ambas. Estes retratos foram pintados em Adobe Photoshop, fazendo recurso de brushes e texturas sobrepostas em overlay para simular materiais e técnicas de expressão plástica tradicionais. Aloha blogger friends and loyal followers! yeah, yeah... I'm alive :P

My life's been kinda crazy lately and I haven't found the time to blog. Lotsss of work - I'm in way over my head here... besides, my beautiful PC has seen better days and has been acting a little weird, causing my nerves to collapse cause it's impossible to work like that. Sooo I snapped at it and went to by myself a brand new Imac :D

I have a few new illustrations to post, but for editorial reasons, I'm gonna have to wait 'till they get published before I can post them here. Meanwhile, I leave you this collage that I did for a local graphic design studio (Creative Family). I hope all is well with y'all!

Perdoem a minha ausência da blogosfera, mas a minha vida tem estado de pernas para o ar com imenso trabalho - mais do que aquele que consigo dar conta - juntando a isso o facto de que o meu amigo PC resolveu dar o berro, atrasando ainda mais a minha vida e obrigando-me a comprar um Imac novinho em folha :D

NIMUE DROWNED IN THE WATER

The first mention of Nimue appear in Medieval literature. Some versions of the Arthurian legends present her as a young priestess sent by Avalon to win Merlin's heart and lure him back for their revenge. The magic she uses to make Merlin fall in love with her works in such a way that she too falls for him, but she is bound by duty to seduce and lure him to his death. In this version the Merlin was closed in the lightning-split heart of an oak. She kills herself afterward.
Nimue can be compared to Ophelia in her drowning death.

As many of you may know, besides illustration and design, I have great passion for photography. This time I wanted to show you something different from my usual style, so I kept the post production to the minimum.
Many thanks to the beautiful model who played Nimue in this photo shooting, who is also my very best friend since I was 4 years old. :) Her name is Joana Moitas Beja and she is a very talented pianist and a music teacher.

As primeiras referências a esta personagem surgem na literatura medieval. Algumas versões da lendas Arturianas apresentam Nimue como sendo uma jovem sacerdotisa enviada por Avalon com a missão de seduzir o Merlin da Bretanha e atrai-lo de volta à ilha sagrada para ser julgado como traidor dos mistérios do mundo celta. O feitiço tecido por Nimue com o intuito de o fazer apaixonar-se por ela era perigoso e traiçoeiro, podendo funcionar como uma faca de dois gumes. Aquele que lançava o feitiço poderia também sofrer o efeito da magia, e assim Nimue apaixonou-se por aquele a quem estava destinada a trair. Nesta versão, a jovem sacerdotisa levou a cabo a sua missão e Merlin foi julgado e sentenciado com o terrível castigo de clausura eterna no interior de uma fenda no coração de um velho carvalho. Não suportando a dor e a culpa, Nimue atirou-se ao rio. Esta personagem pode ser equiparável a Ofélia na sua trágica morte por afogamento.

Como muitos de vós saberão, além do design e da ilustração, eu sempre nutri uma grande paixão pela fotografia. Desta vez quis mostrar algo de diferente do estilo a que vos tenho habituado aqui no blogue, e por essa razão, reduzi a pós-produção ao mínimo para preservar a essência das fotografias, sem que se tornassem ilustrações.
Mil obrigados à linda modelo que encarnou o papel de Nimue nesta sessão fotográfica, e que é também a minha melhor amiga desde que tenho 4 anos :) O seu nome é à Joana Moitas Beja - uma talentosa pianista, bem como excelente professora de música.

Hey humans! I've been working with this really classy Portuguese magazine named UMBIGO for 2 issues now, and I'm totally loving it. This time I made 2 illustrations for the cloth section called "Closet". Hope You guys like them :)

With this Issue, UMBIGO celebrates it's 8th year of existence and they wanted to dedicate the "Staff" section of the magazine to the creative department. I have to thank Andre Semedo - UMBIGO's Art Director- for inviting me to take part in this issue's "Staff section" as one of the featured artists. AMERICAN DESIGN AWARDS: 2010 Winter Semi Annual contest

Hey blogger friends! I've been working like crazy and I promise that I'll have fresh new stuff to post as soon as possible. I have been doing photoshotings with some models, and started creating a few illustrations. I've also been visiting amazing places here in Lisbon - like the mystic parks and forests of Sintra for instance, to gather photos for my new pieces. I hope that they will turn out great! :)
In the meantime, I would like to share some good news with you guys: I won 1st and 2nd prize for the Illustration category in the "2010 Winter Semi Annual contest" event by American Design Awards. My "Wonderland" Piece (tree man) got the 1st place, and the illustration that I did for Ibanez Guitars (Steve Vai Ad), got the 2nd place. I feel very honnoured :)
I promise to get back to blogging soon and visiting your blogs to catch up with you guys!

Olá amigos! Tenho andado a trabalhar feito um louco e prometo postar material novo o mais brevemente possível. Fiz algumas sessões com modelos fotográficos e já comecei novas ilustrações. Tenho também andado a visitar lugares magníficos aqui em Lisboa, como por exemplo os bosques e parques místicos de Sintra, com o intuito de reunir fotos para os meus novos trabalhos. Espero que fiquem bons!
Entretanto, gostaria de partilhar convosco uma boa notícia: Ganhei o 1º e 2º prémio na categoria de ilustração no evento "2010 Winter Semi Annual contest" promovido pelas American Design Awards. O meu trabalho "Wonderland" (homem-árvore) recebeu o primeiro lugar, e a ilustração que realizei para a Ibanez Guitars (para um anúncio do Steve Vai) recebeu o segundo lugar. senti-me bastante honrado por esta distinção. :)

TO BE OR NOT TO BE (a shark)

Hey humans (and aliens out there)! :P

I've been thinking in a lot of things lately...things that I didn't used to. Have you ever got the feeling that in order to survive in this competitive world of arts/design, you need to change the very essence that defines who you are and become a "shark"?

Usually I'm a good judge of characters and I can tell who to trust. I don't know what's happening to me, but lately - I must be losing my skills - people have been really disappointing me...like...all the time. People that I used to think of as really good friends and I confess that I never saw that coming.

Maybe I'm naive but what can I say? this really gets to me and makes me very sad. My real friends keep telling me that "there's no such thing as a friend at work". I always refused to believe that...in fact some of my best friends where once co-workers. The truth is that I don't know what to believe anymore...we grow up listening to our parent telling us that we should always be honest and do our best to be good professionals, respecting everybody, treating others as we would like to be treated. But then one day you wake up and realize that this is all just a fairytale. In real life things are very different.
It's also kinda scary to see the true colours of someone that you think you know whenever money is involved...fighting over money always seams so dirty and shallow to me!

I'm getting really tired of the "complicated". I hate playing games and having to pretend all the time, having to read between the lines cause people can't just be honest with you...you know? One day they act like they're your best friends, the next they wont even talk to you, and then a week from that, they are all nice and smiley again...GOD! I wanna move to the jungle...animals are much nicer...even the beasts. At least they don't hide the fact that they want to have you for dinner! :P

Anyways...I made this piece to decorate the facillities of the company I work for...Hope you like it!

Olá Humanos (e E.T.s que andem por aí)! Tenho andado a pensar recentemente em coisas que não costumava pensar. Já alguma vez tiveram a sensação de que para conseguir sobreviver neste mundo competitivo das artes/design é necessário reformular o vosso carácter e alterar a essência que define aquilo que são para se tornarem "tubarões"? Normalmente sou um bom avaliador de carácters e consigo escolher bem as pessoas em quem devo confiar. Mas não sei o que se está a passar comigo ultimamente - devo estar a perder qualidades - porque pessoas que eu via como bons amigos têm-me desapontado de formas que nunca julguei ser possível. Talvez seja ingénuo, mas o que posso dizer? Estas situações deixam-me triste. Os meus verdadeiros amigos insistem em me dizer que "não há amigos no trabalho". Eu sempre me recusei a acreditar nisso, até porque muitos dos meus melhores amigos foram algures no tempo meus colegas de trabalho. Confesso que já não sei em que acreditar...uma pessoa cresce a ouvir os pais dizerem que devemos ser sempre honestos e tratar os outros da forma que gostaríamos de ser tratados. Mas um dia acordamos e vemos que isso não passa de um conto de fadas...na vida real as coisas não são assim.

Chega a ser assustador ver as "verdadeiras cores" de alguém que julgamos conhecer quando há dinheiro envolvido. Discutir por causa de dinheiro sempre me pareceu uma coisa tão suja e superficial...

Estou cada vez mais cansado do "complicado". Ter de fazer joguinhos, andar sempre a olhar por cima do ombro e a ler nas entrelinhas porque as pessoas simplesmente não conseguem ser sinceras. Num dia agem como se fossem grandes amigos, no dia a seguir se for preciso nem nos falam, e uma semana depois são outra vez a simpatia em pessoa...arghhhh! Acho que me vou mudar para a selva, até as feras são mais amigáveis...ao menos com elas sabemos com o que podemos contar - elas não escondem o facto de que nos querem comer ao jantar!

Depois deste testamento, vamos aquilo que interessa - Fiz esta peça para decorar as instalações da empresa onde trabalho. Espero que gostem.

Hey bloggers! I was invited by the editor of a fashion magazine from Miami, to showcase my work in it's Spring/summer 2010 Edition. This publication is called Apollo Modells, and it focuses on the positive image of man through fitness, fashion, arts, films and entertainment.

This illustration is from my new GENESIS series, and I called it: "Seriously?? superpowers and everything?". I had a great time doing this one.

Hello everybody! I had the honor and great pleasure of having my work associated with one of my favorite writers ever. JULIET MARILLIER (an internationally acclaimed author from New Zeland, currently based in Australia), contacted me with a request to use an illustration that I made for Offf Oeiras 2009’s catalogue (Wonderland), to illustrate an article about her work in Good Reading Magazine (a high quality book review Australian magazine with articles about books and writers). I’ve read all her books and I’m always looking forward to the next masterpiece that she’ll come up with. Juliet writes epic fantasy novels and I believe that our creative universes are very similar. It was great to see my work in her article! :)

Olá pessoal! Tive o prazer de ver o meu trabalho associado com uma das minhas escritoras preferidas. JULIET MARILLIER (Uma autora neozelandesa internacionalmente aclamada), contactou-me com um pedido para lhe conceder a minha ilustração Wonderland (que criei inicialmente para o catálogo do Offf Oeiras 2009), para ilustrar um artigo que escreveu acerca do seu trabalho para a revista Australiana Good Reading (uma publicação de alta qualidade de críticas literárias, com artigos sobre livros e escritores). Já li todos os livros desta autora até à data, e estou sempre na expectativa de saber qual será a sua próxima criação. A Juliet escreve sobretudo romances épicos de fantasia, que assentam em factos históricos. Penso que os nossos universos criativos são muito semelhantes. RAWR! (me eat you!)

Hey everybody! I know It's been a while since my last post. I have a few new things to post, but I'm not allowed to do it just yet.

In the meantime, here's something that I came up with the other day... I called it RAWR! (me eat you!).

Sometimes - especially when I'm feeling a little blue - I like to just create compositions without thinking about anything...I just like to let it flow and see what happens. That's my way of getting to know myself a little better and understand what is happening within - what my feelings/emotions are at the moment. In the end, even though I haven't give it too much thought, it all makes perfect sense. This piece is about urban predators, the ones with 2 legs who live in the real jungle - the city. Sometimes, living in the depths of a forest with the beasts can be easier than having to face the worst sides of human nature.

Olá amigos blogueiros! Já lá vai algum tempo desde o meu último post. Tenho algumas coisas em lista de espera para postar, mas de momento ainda não me é permitido faze-lo na medida em que os respectivos trabalhos estão para ser publicados em breve e por uma questão de ética profissional, não os colocarei online antes disso se concretizar. Entretanto, deixo-vos uma ilustração que criei há apenas alguns dias atrás…chamei-lhe RAWR! (me eat you!). Por vezes – especialmente quando me sinto mais depressivo – gosto de criar composições sem pensar em absolutamente nada daquilo que estou a fazer. Gosto de deixar a criatividade fluir e ver o que acontece. É a minha forma de analisar e perceber os meus sentimentos/emoções nesse momento. No fim de a peça estar concluída, apesar de não ter feito esforço nenhum para construir um conceito de raiz, tudo faz perfeito sentido.

Esta ilustração fala sobretudo de predadores urbanos – os de 2 pernas que vivem na verdadeira “selva2 que é a cidade. Por vezes, viver nas profundezas de uma floresta, no meio das feras, pode ser menos complicado do que ter de enfrentar os lados mais tenebrosos da natureza humana.

STEVE VAI AD (Ibanez Guitars)

I was assigned by Ibanez Guitars to create an illustration for an ad to promote Steve Vai's latest signature model: JEMEAFX guitar - The first Eco friendly guitar. I was responsable for the illustration only and provided some help with graphic design decisions, such as logos position and font choice. Typography and image resizing was handled by Steve Vai's designers, under the direction of Ibanez Marketing / Advertising Director: Jim Gallagher.

Fui contratado pela Ibanez Guitars para criar uma ilustração para um anúncio com o objectivo de promover o último modelo de guitarras assinadas pelo Steve Vai: a JEMEAFX guitar - a primeira guitarra "amiga do ambiente".

Fui responsável apenas pela ilustração e ajudei em alguma decisões de design gráfico, como por exemplo posicionamento de logos e escolha da font. O copy, tratamento e arrumação do texto, bem como o enquadramento da imagem, foram trabalhados pela equipe de designers do Steve Vai, sob a direcção do Director de Marketing & Publicidade da Ibanez: Jim Gallagher.

NIRVANA: Character design

Hey blogger friends! I finally found the time to go back to this character and finish it. I had this image in my head for a long time now, and I'm glad I could finally turn it into something tangible.

As you have probably noticed by now, I like to subvert stories and then tell them in my own twisted way - I have this incredibly fertile and bizarre imagination (like...in a really crazy kind of way), but I'm sure you have also noticed that by now.

So...One day, not too long ago, I found my self thinking about old myths - I do that a lot - and I had this totally insane idea:
What if the patron gods of the elder civilizations got tired of being confined to those nations that they were supposed to protect, and decided to travel far away to see the world?? For example, what if ancient Egyptian goddess Bastet had enough of Egypt and decided to go on a spiritual retreat to India instead?? As she is meditating, rethinking her priorities and figuring out what to do next with her new life, she is plugged in to charge her batteries. That's what this illustration is all about.
Am I completely insane? Oh no no no! Don't answer that! :P

Olá amigos blogeiros! Finalmente consegui arranjar tempo para voltar a trabalhar nesta personagem e terminá-la. Tive esta imagem na cabeça durante bastante tempo e estou satisfeito por a ter conseguido finalmente transformar em algo tangível.

Como já devem ter reparado, eu gosto de subverter as estórias e contá-las à minha maneira. Tenho uma imaginação incrivelmente fértil (que chega a roçar a loucura), mas estou certo de que também já se aperceberam disso.

Um dia, não há muito tempo, dei por mim a pensar nos velhos mitos - coisa que acontece com frequência - e ocorreu-me esta ideia completamente demente:

E se os deuses padroeiros das civilizações antigas se fartassem de estar confinados às nações que supostamente foram encarregues de proteger e decidissem viajar para longe e conhecer o resto do mundo?? Por exemplo: E se a deusa egípcia Bastet se cansasse do Egípto e resolvesse ir num retiro espiritual para a índia?? Ao mesmo tempo que medita e repensa as suas prioridades, Bastet está ligada à corrente a carregar as suas baterias. É disto que fala esta ilustração.

Sou completamente demente? Não não não! não respondam a essa pergunta! :P

"Behold! The Sword of Power! Excalibur! Forged when the world was young, and bird and beast and flower were one with man, and death was but a dream!” (line from the movie Excalibur [1981]).

This illustration was inspired by Marion Zimmer Bradley's masterpiece: "The Mists of Avalon". Morgaine le Fay is my favorite character of all times.

In this amazing novel, Bradley takes us on a journey through Irish and Celtic myths and speaks of a time when woman ruled the world. She tells the story of king Arthur, but from a whole different perspective. In the traditional legend of King Arthur, Morgaine/Morgana is the evil sister and a witch. The Mists of Avalon is Morgaine's version of the facts. She is telling the story...

Hey bloggers! I'm working on an illustration project, and I really need photographic models for a photo shot (it's a personal project, so there isn't going to be money involved - just creativity).
So, If you are a model (amateur or professional, male or female, between 18-37 years old) and would like to increase your portfolio, or just want to try it for fun, please send me an email (with the subject - PHOTOGRAPHIC MODEL) to: xikomartins@gmail.com (I would appreciate if you could attach some photos - face and body).

This is another piece of my "hybrid" collage series. I felt like playing with fairytales creative universe, but in a nonsense kind of way, you know...subverting the characters, mixing the stories and using this bizarre graphic language that makes me think of a very dreamy and alternative dimension where nothing makes sense. Nothing is what it seams to be...because it's constantly shifting. In one minute you're you, the next you're a bird, or a fox, or something else and the funny part is that you don't even seam to find it strange. In this illustration you can find allusions to "Alice in Wonderland", "Cinderella" and other known fairytales and fables.

Esta é mais uma peça da minha série de colagens "Hybrid". Apeteceu me brincar com o universo criativo dos contos de fadas, mas recorrendo a um discurso "nonsense", subvertendo os personagens, misturando as histórias e usando uma linguagem gráfica bizarra que me faz pensar num ambiente onírico e uma dimensão alternativa onde nada faz sentido. Nada é aquilo que parece ser porque está em constante mutação. Num momento eu sou eu, no próximo sou um pássaro, ou uma raposa, ou outra coisa qualquer. A parte interessante é que quando isto acontece nos nossos sonhos, nem sequer o consideramos um pouco estranho...parece-nos simplesmente algo de perfeitamente natural. Assim, nesta ilustração podem-se encontrar alusões a "Alice no País das Maravilhas", "Cinderella" e outros contos e fábulas conhecidos.

Just Playing around...Doesn't your mind ever wonder completely insane things? you know, like...have you ever imagined what kind of animal this or that person you see on the street could be? (yes, yes, I'm totaly aware that I "sound" like a really crazy person!).

Apenas uma pequena brincadeira. Nunca vos aconteceu darem convosco a imaginar coisas absolutamente dementes? Às vezes dou por mim a tentar decidir que tipo de animal seria esta ou aquela pessoa que vejo na rua...(sim, sim! tenho perfeita noção de que isto é conversa de alguém que devia estar enfiado num colete de forças!).

Hey blogger pals! How r ya doin'? Enjoying the weekend?

So I'm reading this funny book by Marion Zimmer Bradley where a powerful sorcerer that is also a scientist, conducted some experiments on humans beings and managed to create hybrid species. After his creative experiments, the most unlikely creatures imagined of all walked the earth. Body of a man or woman with animal heads, hair like feathers and stuff like that. The whole book is a metaphor/allegory and it actually speaks about racial hatred and every kind of discrimination. Ultimately it speaks about the way mankind has failed to accept and deal with difference.

Anyway...I was like BORED TO DEATH today with NOTHING to do, so I came up with this idea and decided to do this illustration just for fun. Hope you like it!

Olá amigos "blogueiros"! Como tem passado? Espero que estejam a aproveitar o fim de semana!

Tenho estado a ler um livro da Marion Zimmer Bradley, onde um poderoso feiticeiro, que é simultâneamente um cientista, ao realizar algumas experiências em seres humanos, conseguiu criar espécies híbridas. Após o seu acto criador, as mais estranhas criaturas passaram a caminhar entre os humanos. Seres com corpo de homem e cabeça de animal, com penas em vez de cabelos conviviam agora com os homens, que não perderam tempo e logo aproveitaram para os escravizar. Na realidade o livro é uma alegoria, e o seu verdadeiro tema é o ódio racial e todo o tipo de discriminação. A autora fala sobre a forma como a humanidade tem falhado ao longo da história em aceitar e lidar com a diferença.

Hoje estava a morrer de tédio sem NADA para fazer e esta ideia veio-me à cabeça. Decidi fazer esta ilustração para passar o tempo. Espero que gostem!

Hey people! Having a nice week? I hope so!

This is a project that I developed in late 2007 for Primitive Reason -"A transnational band (of American, Spanish, and Portuguese backgrounds) whose music is a reflection of the diverse cultural and musical influences of its members. Instruments such as the Indian Tabla and Sitar, the Australian Didjeridoo, the African Djemb, and the Middle-Eastern Darabukkas add an ethnic flavor to the eclectic mix of hardcore/metal, ska/ reggae/dub, world music, drum and bass, and urban grooves which make up their characteristic sound".

I really wanted this project to illustrate the multicultural richness of Primitive Reason's music. They're ethnic sound as well as the band's name makes me think of earth and the primordial elements, ancient cultures and rudimental symbols. In order to gather all of these concepts into a tangible and cohesive image, I created my own vision of the universal goddess of the Earth common to many cultures (Gaia to the Greeks, Ceridwen to the Celts, Branwen/Banba to the Gaels, Bhuma Devi to the hinduists, etc), and used several primitive symbols from ancient civilizations (Indian and mesoamerican cultures) to create the kind of graphic language and mystical atmosphere that I wanted.
Anyway, I took these photos last Sunday. Just thought I could share this with you guys...Hope you like it!

Este é um projecto que desenvolvi para os Primitive Reason em finais de 2007. Os Primitive Reason são uma banda transnacional (com origens Americanas, espanholas e Portuguesas), cuja música é uma reflexão da diversidade de influências culturais e musicais dos seus membros. Instrumentos como a Tabla e a Cítara Indianas, o Didjeridoo Autraliano, o Djemb Africano, e o Darabukkas do Médio Oriente adicionam um sabor étnico à mistura eclética de hardcore/metal, ska/ reggae/dub, world music, drum and bass e urban grooves que tornam o seu estilo tão característico.

A minha intenção foi desde o início que este projecto ilustrasse a riqueza multicultural da música dos Primitive Reason. A sua sonoridade étnica, bem como o nome da banda, faz me pensar em terra e nos elementos primordiais, culturas antigas e símbolos rudimentares. Para conseguir reunir todos estes conceitos numa imagem tangível e coesa, criei a minha própria visão da universal deusa da terra, comum a muitas culturas (Gaia para os Gregos, Ceridwen pra os Celtas, Branwen/Banba para os Gaélicos, Bhuma Devi para os Hinduistas, etc), e usei vários símbolos primitivos de civilizações antigas (culturas mesoamericanas e Indiana) para criar o tipo de linguagem gráfica e atmosfera mística que pretendia.
Tirei estas fotos antes de ontem e pensei em partilha-las convosco...Espero que gostem!

Hi everybody! This year one of my illustrations (Wonderland) was published in Offf Oeiras 2009 official catalogue. Here's some photos.

Offf is a post-digital creation culture festival created by Inofffensive and 50Done. It's a three-day event that showcases top digital artists, web, print and interactive designers and motion graphics studios. Happens every year since 2001 and has already taken place in Barcelona, New York, and now Portugal (Lisbon).

This year I really loved to see Joshua Davis, PES, Digital Kitchen, Neville Brody, Aaron Koblin and Stefan Segmeister.

Olá pessoal! Este ano uma das minhas ilustrações (Wonderland) foi publicada no catálogo oficial do Offf Oeiras 2009. Deixo aqui algumas fotos.

O Offf é um festival de cultura pós-digital, criado pela Inofffensive e 50Done. É um evento de 3 dias que apresenta artistas digitais de topo, web designers, designers gráficos, designers de multimédia e estudios de motion graphics. Acontece todos os anos desde 2001 e já teve lugar em Barcelona, NY e agora Portugal (Lisboa).

Este ano as conferências de que gostei mais foram as de Joshua Davis, PES, Digital Kitchen, Neville Brody, Aaron Koblin e Stefan Segmeister.

THE MOON DANCER

(...) In that moment the princess knew that the only way to break the spell that turned her sisters into stone, was to call upon the forces of the Other Realm. It was time. The strange stone necklace that the wise woman gave her the other day by the river was glowing. She was told only to use it when the time was right. The woman warned her that it was very powerful and should not be used unless it was an hour of despair. Well…that was definitely the case.
She started to say the magic words and began to perform the Moon dance that would open the gates between her world and the other.
As she was dancing, a strong wind started to blow, whipping her long golden hair. Help was on its way (...)

(...) Naquele momento a princesa soube que a única forma de quebrar o feitiço que transformara as suas irmãs em pedra, seria invocar as forças do Outro Reino. Chegara a hora. O estranho colar de pedra da lua que a sábia anciã lhe dera no outro dia, quando se encontrava nas margens do rio, começara a brilhar. Só deveria ser usado na altura certa, dissera-lhe a mulher. Avisara-a de que era muito poderoso e que não deveria ser usado a não ser numa hora de desespero. Bem…era certamente esse o caso.
A princesa começou a proferir as palavras mágicas e iniciou a dança da lua que abriria o portal entre o seu mundo e o outro.
Enquanto rodopiava, levantou-se um vento forte que açoitava os seus longos cabelos dourados. Ajuda vinha a caminho (...)

Olá amigos, colegas, seguidores e visitantes! Tenho andado bastante ocupado com trabalho ultimamente, e não me tem sobrado tempo para os meus projectos pessoais. Entretanto, resolvi postar esta fotomontagem que criei ontem com 2 characters que fiz já há algum tempo atrás por ocasião de umas ilustrações que fiz sobre o fairytale: Cinderella. Hello friends! I know that it's been a while since my las post, but I’ve finally got some time for an update, so here's something fresh new...
Besides ancient miths and legends, fairytales and science fiction storys, I have always been inspired by Nature. This piece is a window to the world I used to live in when I was a kid (I stil do, actualy! :P). I've just finished it...hope you like it!

Olá Amigos! Eu sei que já lá vai algum tempo desde o meu último post, mas finalmente consegui arranjar tempo para actualizar o blog. Aqui vai uma ilustração novinha em folha...
Além das lendas e mitos antigos, contos de fadas e histórias de ficção científica, a Natureza sempre me inspirou. Este trabalho é uma janela para o mundo em que vivia quando era criança (e onde ainda vivo para dizer a verdade! :P). Acabei a ilustração agora mesmo...espero que gostem.

Yoh Bloggers, what's up? Are you starting out 2009 on the right foot?? Hope so! I haven't had a lot of free time lately to create new stuff, so I thought I could publish some of my science-fiction characters. THE SUN PRIESTESS

Far, far away, lived a very powerful princess of remarkable abilities. She was known as the Virgin Princess of Dudhwa, and became famous for her extraordinary beauty and wisdom. Princess Yamuna served as a priestess of the Sun In a very ancient temple built in the heart of the Indian jungle, and was the keeper of the seven mysteries that could unlock the 4 gates to the other world. Despite her youth, she possessed deep knowledge on the secret arts of magic and held the power to communicate with all kinds of animals that kept her informed about everything that happened in the surroundings of the temple.
Every morning as the sun emerged in the sky, she would walk trough the jungle as the giver of light, blessing all forms of life (…)

Muito, muito longe, vivia uma poderosa princesa que possuía habilidades notáveis. Era conhecida como a Princesa Virgem de Dudhwa, e ficara conhecida pela sua extraordinária beleza e sabedoria. A Princesa Yamuna servia como sacerdotisa do Sol num templo muito antigo que se erguia no coração da selva indiana e era a guardiã dos 7 mistérios que podiam abrir os 4 portais para o outro mundo.
Apesar da sua juventude, Yamuna possuía um conhecimento profundo a respeito das artes secretas da magia e detinha o poder de comunicar com todos os tipos de animais, que a mantinham informada sobre tudo o que se passava nos arredores do templo.
Todas as manhãs, quando o sol se erguia no céu, ela caminhava através da selva como a dadora da luz, abençoando todas as formas de vida (…)

A PRINCESA DE ÉBANO / The Ebony Princess

(…) Daughter of the Sun and the Moon’s sister, princess Alafiá had a light of her own. Wherever she went, her shine was so bright that enlightened the heart of those who laid eyes on her. Her skin was dark as ebony and her long black hair flowed down her back like a waterfall. Her olive green eyes were kind and used to glow like stars, revealing her merciful and benevolent nature.
That day, Alafiá decided to go on a journey. Her mission would drive her across precipitous mountains, endless African plains inhabited by ferocious wild animals and deep rivers of boisterous waters, to seek the council of a very old and wise woman.
She hoped that the strange woman would reveal to her a powerful and millenarian secret that she heard about when she was little: the formula of an ancient spell made with the roots of a very rare and exotic plant that grew in unknown location. She would use it’s magic to put an end to the hunger and misery of her people (…)

(…) Filha do Sol e irmã da Lua, a princesa Alafiá possuía luz própria. Por onde quer que passasse, o brilho que irradiava iluminava e aquecia o coração daqueles que a avistavam. A sua pele era da cor do ébano e os seus longos cabelos escuros caíam-lhe em cascata pelas costas abaixo como uma exuberante cortina negra. Os seus olhos verde-azeitona eram bondosos e resplandeciam como dois astros luminosos, revelando uma natureza benevolente e misericordiosa.
Naquela tarde, Alafiá decidira partir numa jornada. A sua missão levá-la-ia a percorrer os planaltos escarpados das regiões montanhosas que demarcavam as fronteiras dos domínios do seu pai, lançá-la-ia através de extensas planícies onde habitavam ferozes animais selváticos e fá-la-ia atravessar rios de águas revoltas e profundas, em busca do conselho de uma mulher muito velha e sábia que vivia isolada do resto mundo.
Esperava que a estranha anciã lhe confiasse o poderoso segredo milenar de que ouvia falar desde pequena: a fórmula de um feitiço realizado a partir das raízes de uma planta muito rara e exótica, que crescia em parte incerta. Usaria a sua magia para acabar com a fome e com a miséria que atormentava o seu povo (...)

I had no idea that these old drawings of mine would cause such an impression. If I knew, I would’ve post them sooner. A lot of people have been asking me lately to publish some more examples of this kind of work in this space, so here it goes. I must have been around 16 years old when I drew this. Não fazia ideia que os meus velhos desenhos despertariam reacções tão positivas. Se soubesse, tê-los-ia postado mais cedo. Recebi recentemente pedidos de várias pessoas para publicar mais alguns exemplos deste tipo de trabalho neste espaço. Sendo assim… aqui vai. Devia ter cerca de 16 anos quando desenhei estas peças. Espero que gostem…

I have always been fascinated by indians. American and Polynesian natives are my favourite. They’ve always seemed so wise and magical to me…Their connection to the earth is so powerful, that I almost envy them. Sometimes I dream that I’m one of them...

* This time, I wanted to try something a little more “subversive” than the usual...So for a few moments, I actually WAS an Indian.

Os índios sempre me fascinaram. Os nativos americanos e polinésios são os meus preferidos. Sempre me pareceram mágicos e muito sábios... A sua ligação com a terra e com os elementos é tão poderosa que quase os invejo. Às vezes sonho que sou um deles...

* Desta vez, tive vontade de tentar algo apenas um pouco mais “subversivo” do que o habitual...Assim, por alguns momentos, eu realmente FUI um índio.
